FAVORITE CHILDREN'S BOOKS [Rachel Watkins]
12/22/2009
It is common now to recommend children's books for presents as they do retain a value long beyond Christmas morning.
Some favorites in the this house would be anything by Mo Willems ("Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" and others) while other favorite authors include Lynn Musinger and Peggy Rathman while my Princess in Training, Grace, endorses all things Fancy Nancy.
As we were talking about this I remembered for the first time in long time my childhood favorite, "Where's Wallace" by Hillary Knight. I took this book out almost every trip to the library when I was a child and continued to covertly check it out as a teen (to take on babysitting jobs, I would explain). But much to my 'oh my gosh' moment this morning didn't realize we didn't own it!
Long before Where's Waldo and the I Spy books was this delight where you investigated the apartment building, zoo, department store and other places looking for Wallace, an errant orangutan baby.
I loved it and, did not realize until this morning, that my current batch of kids hadn't yet seen it. Gotta fix that problem this week!

YOUR FAMILY'S TOP TEN [Rachel Watkins]
12/22/2009
It is the habit of media outlets to distribute Top 10 lists during this time of year. As we wind down one year and enter another, they determine what were the highlights (the landing of the plane on the Hudson) and lowlights (all things Tiger Woods).
Taking some time over the next few weeks perhaps your family wants to create your own Top Ten list. You might want to have a Top Ten Great Things, Miracles or Adventures.
Put up a large piece of paper or poster board and ask everyone to list a few things - see what keeps coming up (vacation this summer, new baby??), ask for votes just like they do at the Oscars and have a ceremony/party to announce the winners.
And don't shy away from Top Ten Worst Things. Looking back on the year to face your struggles can give you a chance to see them in God's plan, see what good came out of the bad or just offer up the situation up once again if it is still a problem.
What would be on your Top Ten List? |
