DON'T TRUST YOUR GPS - IT IS OUT TO GET YOU! [Rachel Watkins]
12/29/2009
I had an experience with the same situation as did a couple in Eastern Oregon but it was in the summer and Matt and I weren't at any real risk. However, traveling in Western New York for a convention we borrowed my sister's car and GPS. We put in our destination and headed out. We were in pretty rural country and were enjoying the scenery and WIND TURBINES when our GPS began to insist we take a forestry fire road!!

Seriously, it wanted us to (put on your best GPS voice) "make the next left". The next left was not really a road in the usual sense with blacktop and white lines but a path!! Well, not really a path but a dirt road with a clearly posted sign which stated that this
"Fire Road - CLOSED from Oct.-April and not to be used as a through road".

We trusted the green and white sign and kept going on the 'real' road when the GPS started getting snarky and snotty (as they do) and kept yelling at us to make the next available legal U-turn!!

Matt and I couldn't help but laugh - we were making jokes about who was waiting at the top of the hill off the fire road and how much had they had paid the GPS to send up the next victims.

A fire road - how does a fire road make it into a GPS as a viable option for a trip???

This poor couple won't be trusting their GPS anymore -

ONE OF MY RESOLUTIONS IS TO READ MORE.... [Rachel Watkins]
12/29/2009
I am trying to make my list of what I want to read now before the year gets started and I'm looking for some good titles or lists to rely on.

Any suggestions? I'm looking for a trustworthy "Catholic" list as well as any good suggestions for secular reading.

IN LIGHT OF WHAT DEFINES YOU - IS IT TOO MUCH TV? [Rachel Watkins]
12/29/2009
My feelings about TV are well-known to the readers here at HMS - if you are finding it hard to cut down or quit all together consider this story:

"Free TV may go the way of the VHS" - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34619571/ns/business-media_biz/

Considering this is how my family gets what little TV we do watch, I think we might be watching even less. Not necessarily a bad thing!

WHAT WILL DEFINE YOU IN 2010? [Rachel Watkins]
12/29/2009
You are what you eat.
You are what you read, watch, do and say. Our actions define us. What defines you?

If you don't like something in your life now is the time to change it. Not only because that is what we are 'supposed' to do as the year changes but that is Christ call us to.

Be better each day as He provides all the grace, tools and help you need (we're here at HMS!).

THE YEAR IS ENDING... [Rachel Watkins]
12/30/2009
and we can't stop it. But, who would want to? The way I feel, every year that passes is one more year closer to Jesus' return.

While I may miss the years gone by and wonder about what I did and did not do I have come to accept that my life - all of my life - is God's. I am God's property and I will merely try to walk closer to Him.

NEWSWEEK HAS A LIST OF THINGS TO 'LEAVE BEHIND' IN 2009 [Rachel Watkins]
1/1/2010
I can admire a few items on the list such as forgoing reality TV but a few of them could be lumped into 'leaving the Catholic Church and its teachings' behind.

They recommend abandonment of abstinence only education citing that reports have 'proven' that teens who take chastity promises and such take just as risky behaviors as their counterparts and even have higher incidence of STD's!! Really?

Considering that they do realize that "abstinence is the only way to prevent pregnancy" (big surprise here!), perhaps we may need to rethink how the it is presented but abandoning completely will only result in more heartache and unplanned babies.

They also laud the arrival of more embryonic stem cell research - again stating that the advances that will eventually come. Eventually??!! Why is it so hard for them to cheer on the many, proven advances of adult stem cells? If I were backing a winning horse I would want to see some success and yet, embryonic cells have none! None!

FEAST OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD [Rachel Watkins]
1/1/2010
We have in our church a deep, profound and appropriate respect for Mary - our God has a mother and her name is Mary. We know her, her words and her actions.

This year may we resolve to know her better and imitate her more.
