SORRY SO QUIET [Michael Jarecki]
12/30/2008
Besides celebrating Christmas, we have been moving.  While we are only moving 3 miles away, it has been a long, tedious process - not exactly the best way to celebrate the holy season, but it is a blessing as we are moving into a home with more space.  Given that I work out of the home and we homeschool, space is an absolute premium!   I will post as I am able until we are more settled.   Blessed Merry Christmas all!

CLIMBING OUT OF A COLD... [Rachel Watkins]
12/30/2008
Christmas has come and gone and with all the wonderful gifts under the tree came a cold - for mom.

Nothing is worse than Mom being sick is there? Even a competent husband seems to flounder a bit when the Mom is under the weather. Children who could once be counted on cook a dinner and do the laundry seems to lose those skills when the Mom is hiding in bed.

Blessedly, Matt was home from work over the holidays, but considering our Christmas time included a quick weekend trip up to NY to visit my family, it was hard. Nothing like a six hour car trip through the high's and low's of Pennsylvania mountains to make a stuffy head feel better!

It is funny that when I am healthy the house seems to run quite smoothly, with moderate direction and oversight from me when I am healthy. But put me in bed with a strong head cold and everyone needs almost constant assistance and input.

It is as if they can do things if they can see me but if they can't, if I am gone from sight, they flounder and wander about forgetting not only what chores they have but even how to do them.

I thought about this a bit - when my head cleared - and had to laugh. That's how we are sometimes with God isn't it?

Have you ever been on a retreat and spent your time make huge plans off all that you will accomplish when you get home? The grace and seemingly 'extra' presence of God on a retreat makes everything seem possible. The same can happen at an inspiring Mass with a powerful homily. With the help of Christ in the Eucharist you are going home to make some real changes and be holy!

And then you get home - Christ seems invisible. It is as if He is hiding and you can't remember what to do, much less how to do it?

The solution?? I'm not sure as I flounder in this same way. For my kids - Matt just reminded them that they knew what to do and doing it well, especially as I was sick, would be a great gift to me. Mom wasn't gone just 'out of sight' and making sure the house was in good shape when I returned was important.

So it is with Christ. He isn't gone, just out of sight and it is a wonderful gift to Him that we keep the house looking good. We are here (at HMS and in your home and parish) to remind you that you do know what to do and you are capable of doing it. If we work together we can keep it going just as Matt and my kids did.

READER SENDS NEW YEAR GREETING [Pamela H. Pilch]
12/31/2008

Thanks so much to a reader for this!  Happy New Year and God's blessings to you also!

Since we'd like to kick off the new year with a tribute to faith, family, and friendship, I'd like to send to you the words that are printed on a plaque that I gave to my husband:

"I have seen God's acceptance of me in your smile...
Felt His care for me in your helping hand...
Known His love for me in your precious gift of friendship...
I have been blessed because
God gave me you...

All in a time of gratitude---all in a time to think of our blessings and know
Who is the Source of all...

Happy New Year,

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF OUR READERS AND FELLOW BLOGGERS [Rachel Watkins]
12/31/2008
In light of the new year, I send these thoughts to you
Whatever you are wishing for I am wishing for, too

Whatever your prayers are, they are mine as well
May the new year bring blessings with a story to tell

May all that you fear be rendered to joy
May you never feel that you are alone

May all that you need be quickly given
And may it be known it is Christ's life you are living

Though we may not be together, we are not apart
For we both have a home in the heart of God's heart

With great love and daily prayers -

The Watkins Family

Praying for all bloggers and readers that 2009 will bring them peace, health and happiness!!

Thank you to all who have prayed for me this year and my family, especially my little boy, Jonathan, who was diagnosed with leukemia last January, and my mother, who was diagnosed with a devastating recurrence of breast cancer (after 12 years cancer free) last August.

At this point, our little boy is doing great and my mom is stable, and we are all looking forward to a new start in the new Year of Our Lord 2009.

God bless all who read and blog here!!

LOW VITAMIN D/ INCREASES C-SECTION RISK [Pamela H. Pilch]
12/31/2008

New research:

Vitamin D deficiency is common in pregnant women, and it may lead to an increased risk for cesarean delivery, early research suggests.

Vitamin D researcher Michael Holick, MD, PhD, and colleagues from the Boston Medical Center report that women in their study who were severely vitamin D deficient during childbirth were about four times more likely to deliver by cesarean section as women with higher vitamin D levels.

STOP THE MADNESS!!! [Rachel Watkins]
1/2/2009

Made any resolutions this year??  Broken any??  I know I have - to both.

I took some unnecessary pride in the fact that for the first time in almost 20 years I am not putting 'lose some weight' on my list.  I was able - with some grace and perseverance - to lose that during 2008.  I always put on 'pray more' but rarely say how.  I always put on 'be more patient' but rarely reflect on how that is going to happen.  Here it is only 2 days into a a new year and I feel like a failure.

Then I heard - stop it!  Stop trying to be anything other than my child.  Just be  - just be - for a moment and reflect on what that means, what does it mean to know that God, the creator of all, loves you?

So, I stopped the introspection and went to my e-mail.  I opened my inbox and read the following from a friend - hope it brings you some perspective as it did me -

Time passes and does not return.  God has assigned to each of us a definite time in which to fulfill His divine plan for our soul; we have only this time and shall have no more.  Time ill spent is lost forever.  Our life is made up of this uninterrupted, continual flow of time, which never returns.  In eternity, on the contrary, time will be no more; we shall be established forever in the degree of love which we have reached now, in time.  If we have attained a high degree of love, we shall be fixed forever in that degree of love and glory; if we possess only a slight degree that is all we shall have throughout eternity.  No further progress will be possible when time has ended.  "Therefore , while we have time, let us work good to all men" Gal 6:10,  "We must give every moment its full amount of love, and make each passing moment eternal, by giving it value for eternity" (St. Carmela of the Holy Spirit).  This is the best way to use the time give us by God.  Charity allows us to adhere to God's will with submission and love and thus at the close of life we shall have realized God's plan for our soul; we shall have reached the degree of love which God expects from each one of us and with which we shall love and glorify Him for all eternity.  (from the book, Divine Intimacy)

My resolution list for the year has made it into the trash and I will spend some time this weekend - just 3 or 4 days into the new year - not too late to think on how I can love more.
