How weird?? Sounds like a good sci-fi book - develop a squadron of killer soldiers who will act in any manner necessary as long as they have magnets placed, very specifically, in their helmets.

HEADING INTO HOLY WEEK [Rachel Watkins]
3/30/2010
It is such a strange situation we find ourselves in each year around this time - Easter again.
Time to remember something that truly happened so long ago it is easy to forget. The secular world seems to have forgotten after all as it saturates our lives with bunnies, jelly beans and neon marshmallow chicks.
But, we don't forget do we? We remember - or at least try.
It may be more challenging, today, in light of the most recent abuse reports out of Europe and Ireland. For some of us, we may be embarrassed to even admit we are Catholic because we know what co-workers and friends will say.
It is hard being a Catholic but then again it was hard for Jesus to pick up His cross. As amazing at is seems, the cross we may be carrying right now is just being publicly and proudly Catholic.
How poetically profound.

Planned Parenthood thanks the nuns who spoke out in support of Obamacare - http://www.lifenews.com/nat6203.html
This alone makes clear that what they did was reprehensible. If PP, the largest abortion provider in our country likes what you do then I think you can conclude you are doing something wrong!

PORNOGRAPHY ADDICTION - READ THIS NOW! [Rachel Watkins]
3/31/2010
http://article.nationalreview.com/429884/getting-serious-about-pornography/anonymous
I cried when I read this. Tho' it is written anonymously I wonder if I might know them. I could - they have five children and those of us with large families tend to know each other. They live in Virginia and I know so many families from VA. She is a counselor...
But I don't think I do...
However, I do know friends and families who are struggling with this problem. These are good families, homeschooling families, great Catholics who think that because they are doing so much right they cannot get this wrong. YOU CAN!
I had a conversation with a priest who was talking about the increase in number of boys (and husbands) who are good people, from good families who are saying this in confession. He revealed no names or any secrets of the confessional. In prep for the talks I was giving last month, I just inquired if he was hearing more about porn and he said yes, without any hesitation, yes! I asked as Matt and I bring it up during our marriage talks.
If you do not have an aggressive filter on your machine then your children can see porn. If your spouse is away at work they can see it. Ask, not accusatory, but perhaps share this article and see what reaction you get.
Do not lose your family and marriage to this beast.
- If you do not have a filter check your computer's history daily to ensure your children are not actively or accidentally seeing porn. More often than not it begins as an accident as they hit a link thinking they are headed to one site and then get thrown into another x-rated one.
-Even with a filter, be sure to check reguarly as almost every filter has its flaws.
-If you find exposure, deal with it. Talk honestly and gently with your kids (appropriate to their ages). Get help from Dr. Greg and crew if need be.
-If you find any hint of addiction you really need Dr. Greg (or other professional) to handle it. Porn is as addictive as the article states and it just won't go away.

I'M MOORING THE WATKINS' BOAT FOR TODAY.... [Rachel Watkins]
3/31/2010
Many people like the idea of life as a river. There was the nice Garth Brook's song of the same title a few years back that got a good deal of airplay.
"I will sail my vessel 'Til the river runs dry Like a bird upon the wind These waters are my sky I'll never reach my destination If I never try So I will sail my vessel 'Til the river runs dry"
Not a bad song, easy to sing along with in the car.
BUT - if you want your life to be a river as described, are you sure of your destination (refer to the previous post of hell)? And, once your destination is chosen are you taking care that your ship and its occupants are all doing well or do you just keep floating no matter what is happening?
Here at the Wonderful World of Watkins, we have been motoring full speed on our river for a few weeks now and I am one weary captain.
We have been involved in school, play practice (our homeschool group is doing Macbeth w/ 5 of my kids in it) along w/ laundry, meals and life. I have been feeling more than a little overwhelmed each day I fall into bed.
It came to a head yesterday when, in pouring rain, I found myself traveling to Wal-Mart twice and still came home without two important things (light bulbs and flour). Yes, it was my own fault that I didn't make a list but I was moving so fast I didn't even think about making a list but just kept going.
So starting today, I am going to moor the great ship Watkins and make sure the ship and its passengers are doing all right. A little attention to the bedrooms, some time to make a shopping list (light bulbs come first as our kitchen has been dark for three days now!) and a bit more time in some quiet prayer.
Our destination will never change - heaven - but we are not compelled to keep floating in that direction without any pause. Even Jesus himself knew he had to leave the others and go off and pray.

THE NUMBERS ARE IN - HELL NO LONGER EXISTS! [Rachel Watkins]
3/31/2010
Check out this piece over at the Register by Pat Archbold - http://www.ncregister.com/blog/hell_is_not_hot
In the piece, Lisa Miller who had recently written a book about heaven. In an interview with Sally Quinn, "Miller is asked whether she believes in Hell, to which she replies with an emphatic “no.” Asked why, she cites the dwindling polls numbers for hell. Hell is not hot right now."
So, it is all about the numbers. 3 out of 5 dentists, 1/2 of all Americans, only 2%....etc., etc.
I like the idea of living my faith by the numbers - yes, it is important to me that I base my eternal salvation and my place of residency for all eternity on a poll of people who were interrupted during their dinner time or at a mall while shopping (usual places of polls).
No, seriously, the hell study may have been totally above board and meet all the criteria for scrutiny as a scientific study BUT we are still relying on people to say that they believe in a place that they know by description is not a good place to be. And which they also know they might end up!
Sorry, I'll stick with Jesus who was quite clear that hell existed.

I LIKE BEING A CATHOLIC AND NOW I KNOW IT'S GOOD FOR ME! [Rachel Watkins]
3/31/2010
I do, really and honestly.
It is not something I am doing because my parents were, although that is how I began my faith journey. I am not a Catholic because it is popular - 'cuz it ain't!
I am a Catholic because not only do I have science backing my decision to be an active, passionate Catholic - http://www.zenit.org/rssenglish-28800
I am Catholic because Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth and died for me! As Catholics we believe and preach it and do our best to live it (with, quite honestly, some of living it better than others).
Be Proud of Being Catholic!

DO YOU KNOW WHO NEAL MCDONOUGH IS?? [Rachel Watkins]
4/1/2010
Actor - Minority Report, Band of Brothers, Sci-Fi's "Tin Man", neat remake of the Wizard of Oz story??
Well, not only is he a good actor he is a good guy. From over at www.ncregister.com
From Matt Archbold's blog - "But just this week, McDonough was suddenly replaced by another actor while filming “Scoundrels.” Why? Because McDonough refused to do some “heated love scenes” for the show."
Check it out. I really like this guy and now I like him even more! Just like with Jim Caviezel. Fell in 'love' with him as the Count of Monty Cristo, and then again in Frequency, I am David and of course, the Passion. Nice guy, nice actor.

HAPPY APRIL'S FOOLS DAY [Rachel Watkins]
4/1/2010
Want some easy fun -
go to www.google.com and you'll find that they've renamed themselves Topeka!! Yes, in honor of the fact that Topeka has changed its name to Google they are making a one day swap.
It's funny reading.
While at Topeka, type in "Find Chuck Norris" then click "I feel lucky" located below. It's a funny page as well.
And speaking of Chuck Norris, are you aware of the many Chuck Norris jokes out there? Now, our family 'loves' Chuck Norris, big fans of Walker, Texas Ranger :-), so it's a real hoot -
Here's the top five -
1. Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried. 2. Chuck Norris counted to infinity - twice. 3. Chuck Norris does not hunt because the word hunting infers the probability of failure. Chuck Norris goes killing. 4. If you can see Chuck Norris, he can see you. If you can't see Chuck Norris you may be only seconds away from death. 5. Chuck Norris sold his soul to the devil for his rugged good looks and unparalleled martial arts ability. Shortly after the transaction was finalized, Chuck roundhouse kicked the devil |
