PARENTING ACCORDING TO THE WSJ [Rachel Watkins]
6/21/2010
What does the Wall Street Journal have to say about parenting??

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704289504575313201221533826.html?mod=WSJ_newsreel_lifeStyle

Another look at how tortured statistics will say anything and how parenting is not as bad as most may think (something we've known here since we started!!!)

Let's cut to the chase (and end) of Mr. Caplan's good article:

"If however you're interested in kids, but scared of the sacrifices, research has two big lessons. First, parents' sacrifice is much smaller than it looks, and childless and single is far inferior to married with children. Second, parents' sacrifice is much larger than it has to be. Twin and adoption research shows that you don't have to go the extra mile to prepare your kids for the future. Instead of trying to mold your children into perfect adults, you can safely kick back, relax and enjoy your journey together—and seriously consider adding another passenger."

It gets even better as he's writing a book - Bryan Caplan is a professor of economics at George Mason University and blogger at EconLog. His next book, "Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids," is forthcoming in 2011. I'll be buying that one!

IT IS VBS TIME HERE [Rachel Watkins]
6/21/2010
It is my parish's VBS and I am the resident story teller. It is a struggle as we are juggling a bit more stuff, but my kids love going. My older kids help out, the little kids sing silly songs, make silly crafts and have fun. Nothing wrong with that. No heresy, no weirdness.

Would I like more depth? Perhaps, but it is summer after all and my kids are not Thomas Aquinas. There are some who bash the "Jesus Loves You" tone but I tend to forgive a VBS what I won't in a regular CCD class during the school year. I do not want my kids making sheep out of cotton balls for an entire school year of religious instruction but for one weekend when it is 80 degrees (and up), I'm okay with it.

Balance in all things - a little bit of silly songs balanced with a bit of chant. Snacks of pretzel sticks and cheerios to imitate the chains and prison bars of Peter is okay with me. Not what I want my kids to 'feed on' all the time but once in a while is not a concern.

For those, who are concerned they tend to talk about those kids for whom this might be their first exposure to Jesus and what about them? Well, perhaps if they like VBS enough, they'll come back in September when the fare is much heartier and made to last longer.

There is great deal that concerns in our world and most VBS programs are not one of them.

BOY, DO WE LIKE MOVIES HERE AT HMS [Rachel Watkins]
6/21/2010
I got some great feedback on my recent movie post. Thanks to all!

As a result I need to make a few things clear -

my list was not 'complete' by any means and there are, of course, some great movies I did not include. I was not forgetting them or excluding them but just didn't put them down as I was just listing a few.

Pixar is by far my favorite studio of all time!! All time! Every Pixar movie has had a quality in plot and artistry superior to all others. I am not a fan, as is Steven Greydanaus, of anime.

And, in mention of Steven, I am not a movie reviewer, just a movie lover and a large family that watches movies as a regular event. We find a great deal of enjoyment in movies, a great deal to discuss and just fun.

Thanks again to all the suggestions of movies and such like.

IN RESPONSE TO MY WIFE'S LOOKING FOR A COMMENTATOR [Matt Watkins]
6/22/2010

Interesting that this was written in 1953

The general ignorance of domestic and foreign problems may be no greater today than In the past, but it is complicated for us by one new factor.  Everyone reads digests, sees films, listens to radio commentators: so that people have an illusion that they know everything, whereas they have only heard of everything.  Not only that. They have views about things on which they lack the elements of knowledge – not their own views, but acquired from some convincing writer or speaker.  They have lent their ears, perhaps to a politician of a camp opposed to [the other political party in power], who may be honest and competent but who certainly wants to get [the other political party] out and himself in.  Or to a publicist – a writer of books or a radio commentator – and he is probably honest, he is not likely to be competent (since the nature of his work allows neither for the study of fundamentals nor for the practical handling of public affairs which combine to produce competence), and in any event he is driven by necessity, imperious beyond all other, of being interesting: for this is his living.

DOES ANYONE KNOW A CONSERVATIVE COMMENTATOR - [Rachel Watkins]
6/22/2010
who isn't bombastic?

A friend was discussing her father's recent love with Glenn Beck. It seems her dad, in his late 70's, has decided anything from Fox is above criticism. I mentioned Mark Shea's ongoing discussion over at the Register about the man.

Mark talks about the grave misconception that a dislike for Mr. Beck should NOT assume an acceptance of the President and his policies.

I find the same to be true of Rush Limbaugh. I have found both of these men to be too over the top in their presentation and attitudes for my taste. I do not care for either of them BUT this should be taken as an endorsement of anyone else. I just don't like them.

Do they speak about important topics? Sure, but they also can get their facts a bit screwed up. And total acceptance of their opinions about how to interpret a situation or how to handle a problem is not required in order to be seen as 'conservative'.

I would love to find a conservative commentator who maintained a great level of control and an ability to speak out on a subject without being so caustic. Is there one out there?

Or is over the top the only way to get ratings, raise blood pressure (of both supporters and detractors) and insure press coverage?
